Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in a 2-Month-Old Baby
Symptoms:
- Fever (temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Irritability or fussiness
- Poor feeding or decreased appetite
- Cloudy, foul-smelling urine
- Increased frequency of urination
- Pain or discomfort during urination
Causes:
- Bacteria entering the urinary tract through the urethra
- Uncircumcised baby boys have a higher risk
Diagnosis:
- Urine analysis: Microscopic examination and culture to identify bacteria
- Blood test: May reveal elevated white blood cell count or other signs of infection
Treatment:
- Antibiotics: To kill the bacteria causing the infection
- Fluids: Encourage the baby to drink plenty of fluids to flush out the bacteria
- Pain relievers: To reduce discomfort during urination
Complications:
- If left untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and cause serious health problems, such as kidney infection or scarring.
Prevention:
- Keep the baby’s diaper area clean and dry.
- Change diapers frequently.
